5 Uses For Ozonated Oil That You Don't Know About

Ozone is turning heads in the alternative health community for its multi-faceted healing applications. Although it is recently gaining popularity, it is not a new therapy, and it has been used and studied for hundreds of years. A quick google search on the health benefits will tell you that ozone’s eminent quality is its anti-inflammatory effect, making it a great pain-reliever.

In fact, ozone has shown remarkable results in treating conditions characterized by symptoms of chronic pain and inflammation such as osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal disorders. After using ozonated oil on a pulled back muscle a couple years ago, and experiencing immediate relief, it became a staple in my medicine cabinet.

However, you may not know that ozonated oil has more benefits beyond pain relief. Its versatility has not gone unnoticed; ozone therapy clinics are popping up all over the country as people are catching on and taking advantage of its numerous benefits—and now companies like Soma Energetics are making it possible to reap the benefits of ozone therapy without the inconvenience of traveling to a clinic.

After getting experimental with ozonated oil, here are some of our favorite ways to use it that you might not know of.

Wounds

Ozonated oil can be applied to cuts, scrapes, and rashes to speed up the healing process. According to research, ozone is affective at regenerating cells and tissue, as well as increasing immune response, which is why it is particularly useful for healing skin;

“ozone can activate the expression of many cytokines which are important for improving wound healing, and antibacterial and antiviral activity. Thus, ozone therapy (OT) has been widely used for improving wound healing, as an antibacterial agent, and modulating immune system” (1).

As stated above, ozone has anti-bacterial properties, so applying ozonated oil to the wound will disinfect it as well as promote tissue repair.

Furthermore, ozone can help relieve itching from wounds that are healing, rashes, and bug bites, making it a must-have for all skin-related issues.

Sunburn relief

While we’re on the topic of skin issues—if you are prone to sunburns, you might want to keep ozonated oil on hand. Anyone who has had a sunburn knows how uncomfortable they are, and how you would try anything and everything to get relief.

Thankfully, ozonated oil is a great way to reduce the inflammation of a sunburn and soothe the irritated skin (as well as providing itch relief!). It helps heal the sunburn faster than other topical sunburn treatments, and it won’t dry your skin like aloe. We have all personally used ozone oil for sunburns and have found that even moderate burns go away in less than a couple days with continuous applications of ozonated oil.

Oil pulling & oral care

The benefits of ozone go deeper than the skin. It has become an increasingly popular therapy in oral/dental treatment. Because of its anti-microbial properties, ozone is effective in preventing plaque build-up, which subsequently prevents the onset of cavities and periodontal disease. The use of ozone may help re-mineralize enamel as well;

“ozone oxidizes pyruvic acid to acetate and carbon dioxide thereby promoting remineralization because acetate has a higher pKa and favor pH buffering in resting plague” (2).

If you want to prevent cavities, re-mineralize your enamel, and prevent plaque build-up, oil pulling with ozonated oil every day is an easy and affective addition to your oral care routine. Just put a teaspoon of Soma’s ozonated salve into your mouth and swish it around for 5 to 10 minutes and then spit into the trash.

Skincare + wrinkle prevention

Recently, ozone has made an appearance in skincare and beauty products– and for good reason!

Elastin and collagen are the proteins responsible for the elasticity and resilience of our skin. Aging and oxidative stress are factors that contribute to lowered production of these proteins. Ozone promotes the production of both elastin and collagen, as well as decreasing cell oxidation, therefore keeping your skin looking healthier and more youthful.

“Ozone therapy is a revolutionary remedy for rejuvenescence allowing to restore the barrier, immune, water-retaining, reparative and separative functions of skin as well as to improve its structure” (3).

Additionally, ozone has been shown to promote cell regeneration, speed up the healing process of blemishes, scars, and uneven skin tone– making it the perfect all-around skincare treatment!

Pets

Ozone is completely safe to use on your furry friends. It can be applied to cuts, rashes, bug bites on your pet’s skin, and it is safe (and beneficial, too!) if they lick it off. As said in an article by Cranberry Holistic Pet Care,

“Ozone therapy is used in a wide variety of applications in pets, and is beneficial in any situation with infection, inflammation, tissue damage, cancer, or other issues” (4).

I have used it many times on my dog when he has had cuts and bug bites and they healed up within a couple days.
